Chose a cable for my home network
POSTED ON 02/21/25
Hi! I recently chose a cable for my home network, and I can share my experience. Often many people ask the question, How long can and Ethernet Cable be? Firstly, Cat5e is already a fairly old standard that does support speeds up to 1 Gbps, but, let's say, in 2025 it becomes a little limited, especially if you want to set up a network that will work not only with current devices, but also with future upgrades. Yes, in fact, Cat5e is still quite capable of handling up to 1 Gbps for the Internet, but if in the future you want to improve your tariff or connect more devices, for example, with 2-3 Gbps, then it can become a weak link. It is also worth considering that Cat5e does not support long-distance operation, if you need to lay a cable through several rooms or floors, the signal will be lost over long distances. Now let's look at Cat6. This cable supports speeds up to 10 Gbps, but only at distances of up to 55 meters. If you have a small house or apartment, and the distances between the router and devices do not exceed this limit, Cat6 will be a good choice. I personally use Cat6 for my network, and, frankly, I do not notice any problems, even under high load - for example, when downloading large files or playing online games with high graphics quality. At the same time, it is important to understand that Cat6 can lose speed at longer distances, so if you have a large area or a complex layout, then it is better to pay attention to Cat6a.
