The First Line of Defence: Connecting Your Smart Gates and Intercoms
POSTED ON 03/10/26

Security starts at the perimeter. For many Irish homeowners, especially in rural areas or detached properties, electric gates are the primary barrier against intruders. In the past, these were simple remote-controlled systems. Today, they are smart. We want video intercoms (like Ring or DoorBird) that ring our phones when someone pulls up, allowing us to see and speak to the visitor from anywhere in the world.

But there is a major technical flaw in many installations. The front gate is often 20, 50, or even 100 metres away from the house. Your standard home router has no hope of reaching that far. We see expensive automated gate systems installed that are "dumb" because they have no internet connection. To make your perimeter security work, you need to extend your network to the kerb.

The Challenge of Distance and Obstacles

Wifi signals degrade rapidly outdoors. Trees, hedges, rain, and stone pillars all block the signal. A simple wifi extender plugged in near the front door is rarely powerful enough to push a signal down a long driveway.

If the video intercom has a weak connection, the video will be pixelated, the audio will lag, or the notification will arrive on your phone two minutes after the courier has already driven away. This renders the system useless. Reliability is key for security. When that button is pressed, the connection must be instant.

Point-to-Point Wireless Bridges

The most effective solution for existing driveways is a Point-to-Point (P2P) wireless bridge. We install a small transmitter on the outside of your house and a receiver at the gate (usually on the back of a pillar or hidden in a hedge).

This creates an invisible "data beam" between the house and the gate. It carries the internet connection across the garden without digging up the driveway. At the gate end, we install a small weatherproof access point. This provides a bubble of strong Wifi distribution specifically for the intercom, the gate motor controller, and any CCTV cameras covering the entrance.

CCTV at the Gate

Once you have internet at the gate, your security options expand. You can install high-definition IP cameras that record clear number plates day and night. These cameras can upload footage directly to the cloud or a recorder in the house.

Without a strong network link, these cameras would need local storage (SD cards), which can be stolen, or would record low-quality footage. A solid link enables 4K streaming, giving you crystal clear evidence if ever required. It turns your gate from a physical barrier into an intelligent monitoring station.

Hardwired Trenches (The Gold Standard)

If you are currently building a house or resurfacing your driveway, we always recommend laying a duct for data cables. Running a fibre optic or outdoor-grade ethernet cable from the house to the gate offers the ultimate reliability.

It is immune to interference and weather. We can terminate this cable at the gate to provide a hardwired connection for the intercom. While digging a trench is expensive retroactively, doing it during construction is cheap and future-proofs the property for decades.

Conclusion

Your smart gate is only as smart as its connection. Investing in automation without investing in the network that drives it is a false economy. By ensuring a robust link between your house and your boundary, you gain total control and visibility over who enters your property, bringing true peace of mind.
