Suwon's first relegation shock... How long did it take other teams to get promoted?
POSTED ON 12/03/23
For the first time since its inception, professional soccer's prestigious K League club Suwon Samseong is headed to the second division. All eyes will be on Suwon to see when they can return to the top flight. Some clubs have returned to the top flight after just one year, while others have been in the second division for five years.

Suwon drew 0-0 with Gangwon FC at home in the final 38th round of the Hana OneQ K League 1 2023 at Suwon World Cup Stadium on Nov. 2. Suwon, who finished in the bottom 12, will be relegated to the K League 2 (second division) next year.

Suwon, which was founded in 1995 and started playing in the K League in 1996, was the first team to play in the second division after the promotion system was introduced. The club has won four K League titles (1998, 1999, 2004, and 2008) and five FA Cups (2002, 2009, 2010, 2016, and 2019), but the relegation will be a humiliating one.

The time it took to return to the top flight after their first relegation varies from club to club.

Three clubs have returned to the top flight after spending only one season in the second division: Sangju Commerce, Daejeon Hana Citizen, and Jeju United.

Sangju Commerce was relegated in 2013, but immediately won promotion and moved up to the first division in 2014. Daejeon Hana Citizens dropped to the second division in 2014 before returning to the first division in 2015. Jeju United was relegated in 2020 and returned to the first division in 2021.

Two teams that spent two years in the second division are Gwangju FC and Seongnam FC. Gwangju was relegated in 2013 and promoted in 2015, while Seongnam went to the second division in 2017 and returned to the first division in 2019.

The teams that spent three seasons in the second division after their first relegation are Gangwon FC, 먹튀검증토토사이트 Daegu FC, and Gyeongnam FC. Gangwon and Daegu were both promoted in 2017 after being relegated in 2014, while Gyeongnam was promoted in 2018 after going to the second division in 2015.

Busan I-Park and Suwon FC spent four years in the second division. Busan was relegated in 2016 and promoted in 2020, while Suwon FC went to the second division in 2017 and returned to the first division in 2021.

The Jeonnam Dragons have not returned to the top division in five years after their first relegation. Jeonnam has been playing in the second division since its relegation in 2019. Jeonnam did not qualify for the promotion playoffs and will remain in the second division next year.
