My Story
I am a teacher and a mom. I like video games, reading, and writing. I also enjoy getting together with my friends and roleplaying (no, not the ***** stuff...get your minds out of the gutters!). We do D&D style fantasy, Shadowrun, and Whitewolf. I hate going to the movies and I am a terrible passenger; I'm a nervous driver, but I would agree to almost any bargain to drive instead of ride with someone including my husband. I have control issues.

Shalonda loves Isaac--Valentine's give away entry
POSTED ON
12/02/10 21:57
Of all of my Sims, the second generation heir of my legacy and his spouse seemed to be the most in love with each other.  Isaac, the third son of Margie and Jebidiah Kendrick, was not the handsome one.  He wasn't even really the genius one (though all three of the boys had the genius trait).  Isaac was the crazy one.
From the moment he met Shalonda Chung at school, the two became inseparable.  Shalonda was not what anyone would consider a good looking girl.  She was chubby, for one thing and she was extremely poor.  She and her father lived alone in a grubby shack on the far side of the wrong side of the river in Riverview.

A loner, Shalonda was always surprised that Isaac, who was well-off and from one of the better neighborhoods, liked her.  As children he would come to her house to play.  Isaac found her little shack interesting.  She never felt ashamed of her lack of wealth when he was there.
As teens, Shalonda stayed plump.  Isaac never seemed to mind her extra flesh.  Shalonda squirreled away as much money as she could in order to buy herself one nice dress which she wore on every date they went on.  Isaac liked how the skirt cupped her ample behind.
As adults, Shalonda and Isaac got married.  She moved into his family's nice house.  His big family intimidated her, but Isaac tried to make her feel more comfortable.  It may have been a shock to everyone when Isaac invited Shalonda's father to live with them, but it wasn't a surprise to her.  Isaac knew that having her father around would make Shalonda happier about being surrounded by so many people.
Another thing Isaac did for her was give her a bit of land for a garden.  It was her little retreat from an endless succession of parties that always seemed to go on at the Kendrick house.

Though she didn't like them, the parties were sort of necessary.  Isaac was becoming quite a musician.  He had a rock image to promote.  Shalonda did her part by dressing more edgy than she was comfortable with.  When she was around all of Isaac's rock and roll buddies, Shalonda always felt like a fat frumpy wife.
But she was the fat frumpy wife that Isaac loved.  He never let his career interfere with their family life.  They had six children together.
Isaac's rock and roll lifestyle eventually caught up with him.  He died at the young age of 82.  Shalonda was never the same without him.   Her only solace was the nightly visitations of Isaac's ghost.  Shalonda lived a long time without her husband.  She died at 112.  Even before she died she seemed more like a ghost than a live woman.  The only people she interacted with were her grandchildren.  Every night she went to bed alone and waited for Isaac's spirit to join her.

Appropriately, Shalonda died in her garden.  Now, she and Isaac both haunt their descendants.  They will always be together.

The Exchange

I find the Exchange to be kind of a funny place.  Aside from the player-created patterns, most of the content there is just recolored game items.  What I find amusing about this is that anyone can recolor a game item.  Why do you need to download someone else's attempt at an original look?

That being said, I have downloaded my share of Exchange items.  I chalk mine up to laziness or just the wow factor of seeing someone's clever use of the patterns and colors.

In terms of Sims on the Exchange, I'm not sure what motivates people to download other player-created Sims.  I upload all of my legacy Sims so that I can use their portrait on my legacy's Who's Who page.  I am always a little surprised that people would bother to download my Sims...I mean most of them are townies.  And it's funny which of the Sims gets the most downloads.  The males are usually the ones with the most hits...and the handsomer the better.

Anyway, until there is more true custom content, I don't anticipate using the Exchange a ton.  I have done it and will probably do it a few more times, but what I liked about the Sims 2 Exchange was how diverse all of the creations could be.
On Stories and the Sims forums

So, I've been writing a legacy for my Sims, the Kendricks.  You can upload any of them from my Sims exchange.  Writing a legacy has been fun and inspirational for me.  I've always enjoyed writing and combining it with playing the Sims has added a whole new dimension to my game.

That said, I really hate the story exchange here.  The picture quality sucks eggs.  And there's no place to comment on the stories except to recommend them or not.  So, I am writing my legacy in the form of a blog.

But, I just uploaded a household onto the exchange with two brothers in it with dissimilar traits.  I posed a challenge on the forum to see if people would download and play this household and write about them.  I don't think anyone will, but we'll see.

The forums leave something to be desired because all of the posts disappear so fast.  I expect my challenge will also disappear.  But here's hoping.  I've been playing the brothers myself, so I should start writing about them, too.  I will just have to work at keeping my stories straight.

On Traits...

So, I've completely enjoyed playing my nerd girl, Margie, who stars as the founder of The Kendrick Legacy.  I chose for her Bookworm, Computer Whiz, Slob, Hopeless Romantic, and Genius.  I suppose the only really negative trait in the bunch is Slob.
Anyway, all of her traits are amusing, but as a slob the thing she does that is disgusting is lick plates clean and eat rancid food.  She never picks up for herself and often makes a  mess when she does tasks like taking a shower.
Bookworm isn't really that interesting.  Margie mostly chooses to read a lot, which can be annoying when you need her to do something like increase her painting or writing abilities.
Computer Whiz gives Margie the hacking abilities, which I admittedly didn't take advantage of, so I'm not really sure how fun it is.
Hopeless Romantic and Genius are both pretty obvious.  Genius gives you the ability to solve math problems for money, but as Margie wasn't in need of funds, she didn't really use this much either.

Margie's spouse, Jeb Kendrick, was Neat, Genius, Workaholic, Good, and Ambitious.  The most negative of these traits is Workaholic.  As a workaholic, Jeb was always working hard and so tended to be tired and stressed.  As an ambitious man, if he didn't get promoted he felt depressed.  The Neat trait pretty much canceled out Margie's slob tendencies.  Finally, being a Good man, Jeb was always donating money to charity.  But, as he and Margie were pretty rich this didn't matter.

One of my favorite traits is the Neurotic trait.  Caleb Kendrick had this one.  He was always checking the sinks and freaking out.  These actions made him calm.  Another cool trait is the Insane trait.  At first I didn't see this manifest much.  Isaac the Insane child would mostly just sit in odd places.  Then he started talking to himself.  He also told ghost stories to anyone who'd listen.  The most strange thing was that he'd dress himself in odd clothes like wearing his swimming trunks to school or swinging in his underwear.

I always get a chuckle out of the Daredevil trait.  It doesn't matter what Jacob Kendrick does, he always does it in an "extreme" way.  Extreme fishing, extreme sleeping, extreme showering....you get the picture.

I haven't really experienced the absent minded trait or the party animal trait that Hannah Kendrick has.  She is just a child though.  I wonder if they will be interesting.

Anyway, I really like the traits system in Sims 3.  It adds a dimension to the game that makes each character unique.  None of my Sims are the "perfect" people I'd often end up with in Sims 2.  Those people would bore me eventually.  I'm not bored  yet.
Nerd Girls Rule

So, as I promised in a previous blog, I intended to create an imperfect Sim and see how she got on in the world.  My first attempt is a nerdy girl called Margie Kendrick (available on the exchange).  Margie is a computer whiz, genius, bookworm, hopeless romantic, slob who loves lilac and eating cookies while listening to classical music.  Her life aspiration is to be a illustrious author.

Now, I suppose that I didn't give her too many negative qualities, but I felt the combination was the ticket here.  Then, to further complicate this poor girl's life, I decided not to have her take a career path.  She briefly went into politics, but then I thought since her goal was to be a writer, I should devote all of her time to that.  So, she never attended one day on the job in politics.  Instead she took a part time job at the bookstore to earn enough cash to live on.  Then she started writing...and writing...and writing.  Her first published work was a Science Fiction piece I titled "Similization 4231."

Since Margie is a hopeless romantic, I decided that she needed to meet men.  This wasn't easy to do.  Most of the guys were in relationships or weren't interested in her conversations about books or computers.  She was a good flirt, but boring.  Then, she met a young doctor, Jebidiah Wilson.  He was a work-a-holic, but seemed to like her.  They went out a few times and she invited him back to her place where she proposed only to be turned down.  Then, she convinced him to go steady instead.

A few more dates and he invited her back to his place...and WOW.  He ened up being rich.  I didn't see that coming.  She proposed again after a night spent in the mansion.  This time he accepted.  They were married in the gazebo and decided to live in the mansion (go figure).  Now, Margie is probably going to give up her part time job and live the life of luxury while she writes and paints her way to her life goal.

I guess even creating a nerdy, imperfect Sim, I inadvertantly stumbled upon success.
